National Geographic to air Jonestown special

The National Geographic channel will broadcast a piece about the Jonestown tragedy at 10 p.m. today.

The November 1978 mass murder-suicide in Guyana had close local ties.

Jim Jones, founder of Jonestown, was a Randolph County native and Richmond High School graduate. His wife, the former Marceline Baldwin, was a native of Richmond.

Jones led the murder and suicide of about 900 Jonestown residents after a California congressman and other members of his fact-finding mission were killed after visiting Jonestown.

The Jonestown episode of “The Final Report” also will air at 1 a.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Oct. 18.
